"Coming up for Air," a collection made in Japan between 2008 and 2009, offers a unique perspective not specifically about Japan but reflecting on our contemporary era through Gill's photography, which imagines a fictional aquatic world providing aesthetic pleasure and evoking a sense of breathlessness. Unlike Gill's other series, these images are characterised by reduced or obscured information, resembling muffled chaos perceived with narrowed vision. The clothbound book features a transparent, individually hand-painted dust jacket, enhancing its uniqueness with gestural brushstrokes.
